Publishing Methods

Traditional, hybrid, self-publishing, vanity press… what’s the difference?

There are a variety of methods to getting your book published.

Traditional publishing:

  • original model for agented and experienced authors
  • publisher offers author a contract to buy all the rights to the work
  • author receives royalties and a possible advance

Hybrid publishing:

  • partnership between publisher and author
  • publisher provides traditional publishing expertise and professionalism
  • author retains ownership of rights, contributes to creative development, and receives higher-than-standard royalties

Self-publishing:

  • author publishes without the involvement of an established publisher
  • author retains all rights, creative control, and incurs all costs

Vanity press:

  • publisher publishes at the author’s expense
  • publisher is unselective, charges high fees, and requires restrictive contracts
  • often engages in deceptive practices
