The Inspiration Behind Nana and Grandma
In Off to Nana and Grandma’s Home, written by Gayathri R. Waring, explores the rich and heartwarming relationship between a child and his two lesbian grandparents. Each expresses her bond in different ways, and both love the child "all the muches." The book features dynamic and colorful illustrations by Hallie Guidry, celebrates diversity and inclusivity, and is based on a true story.
The book is dedicated to Gayathri's mother, Rajalakshmi, whom she lost at the young age of 21. Rajalakshmi cherished books and ignited Gayathri's thirst for stories, a love now passed on to the author's son. The book is also dedicated to Gayathri's mothers-in-law, Beverly and Donna, two inspiring women who deserve to be represented in every way possible.
It was important for me to bring my mom's beloved memory forth and pay homage to her. She loved butterflies very much, which Hallie Guidry captured imaginatively and beautifully in the illustrations.
It’s often hard to put into words, but being a mom is my greatest joy--my son has inspired and enlightened me more than I could ever imagine. Off to Nana and Grandma’s Home came to life from my son’s touching relationship with his grandmothers who express their bond in very different ways but who both love their grandson "all the muches." Beverly has been saying this special phrase ever since adopting their son (my husband) back in 1984.
Considering there are still relatively few books celebrating alternative family dynamics, it was important for me to bring this story to light. Beverly Cleary, one of my favorite authors growing up, says it perfectly: "If you don't see the book you want on the shelf, write it." This book is meaningful for so many reasons and a dream come true.
