Crutch Words

“Crutch words” are words that we often repeat in our speaking manner or writing. These include words like honestly, basically, actually, nearly, seemed, and definitely, among others. Check out this blog post for a list of 40 common crutch words to avoid when writing. They’re filler words that we use to give us more time to construct a response. This isn’t to say you should never use these words. In dialogue, it makes sense that characters would trip over their words a little bit, but crutch words should be avoided in narration.
