"For Bodhi, the young hero of our story, his life undergoes a complete 180 when his younger sister is born. As the family members fawn over the newest addition to the family, he feels forgotten, like he is invisible. Such is the case when a child becomes an older sibling for the first time - it is easy to feel forgotten. In A New Baby, the latest installment of the Rainbow Brigade series by Dr. Sheila Cooperman, the Rainbow Brigade must encourage Bodhi, and show him how much fun being an older brother can be. As Bodhi encounters everyday situations where he is helping younger children, he gains confidence in his leadership abilities and feels ready to take on his new role as an older brother.
A New Baby by Dr. Sheila Cooperman is a wonderful way to help children transition to their new role in the family as an older sibling, without diminishing their worries or feelings. The Rainbow Brigade is a loveable canine crew consisting of Nubby-Bean, Bufie, and Dex. Through their adventures, Bodhi realizes that being a big brother isn’t so bad after all. Perhaps the most satisfying part of the story was Bufie and Dex getting their well-deserved treats. I thought this book did a great job of talking to kids about the responsibilities and joys of being an older sibling. I am so impressed with how the author handled what can be deemed a sensitive topic, that I would love to read the rest of her work with the Rainbow Brigade series."
